Stevenson and Song
CONCERT:
Friday 9 July, 8.30pm
Pathfoot Dining Room, University of Stirling
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Humanly speaking, it is a more important matter to play the fiddle, even badly, than to write huge works upon recondite subjects.
RLS, The Amateur Emigrant
You are cordially invited to an evening of music, song and recital, based on the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. A contribution to the RLS Memorial Trust, a registered Scottish charity assisting children with respiratory disease, will be made from ticket proceeds.
FEATURING:
- ‘From A Garden of Songs’: Songs from the Poetry of RLS
A group of Scottish songwriters set their favourite poems from A Child’s Garden of Verses to music in the folk idiom. The superb result is a A Garden of Songs, to be performed live for the first time at this concert.
- ‘Stevenson and Classical Song’: Recital by Allan Smith, Baritone
With accompaniment on piano (Alice Turner), Allan Smith will perform Stevenson songs in celebrated classical settings by Vaughan Williams, Reynaldo Hahn, Ronald Stevenson, and others. A version of ‘The Vagabond’ in Stevenson’s original conception – ‘to an air of Schubert’ – will be a particular highlight. Allan’s recital will give a flavour of Stevenson’s own taste in classical melody, and the various musical settings and styles his writing has inspired.
- Stevenson-themed Whisky Tasting with Robin Laing
Stevenson mentions specific whiskies at several points in his writing. Singer, musician and ‘whisky bard’ Robin Laing is our guide to three drams.
- Additional recitals from the works of Stevenson
Poems and brief comic excerpts from Stevenson’s fiction will also be performed.
