Plenaries: Update

We have an update to the conference programme to announce.

Laura Marcus will unfortunately not be able to attend the conference. We are extremely pleased to have secured Stuart Kelly as the opening plenary speaker in her place.

As the leading literary journalist in Scotland, he is very well placed to ‘locate Stevenson’ among his contemporary and historical neighbours. Stuart’s talk will revolve around Stevenson, Scott and the aesthetics of artificiality.

‘Stevenson and Song’

We’re very pleased to announce a ’surprise’ additional event.

‘Stevenson and Song’ (Friday 9 July, 8.30pm) will be a separately ticketed concert, featuring folk music and classical singing based on Stevenson’s works. Part of the ticket proceeds will go to the RLS Memorial Trust, a Scottish charity assisting children with respiratory disease.

Full details at the link above. It promises to be a very enjoyable evening, so be sure to book your ticket quickly.

Treasure Island

For those of you in the UK, a new ‘family friendly’ stage production of Treasure Island will be touring from April to June.

The (banana-wielding?) swashbucklers will be in Stirling on 21-22 May; further details on the ‘Wee Stories’ website.

‘Stevenson on Screen’

We are delighted to announce an addition to the conference programme.

The evening before the conference proper begins (Wednesday 7 July), Sarah Neely will give a brief talk introducing a film adaptation of Stevenson’s fiction.

Dr Neely researches Scottish and Irish cinema, and specialises in literary adaptation. Her talk will be an ideal (and fun!) way of orienting ourselves to Stevenson’s pop-cultural afterlife. Watch this space for further details of the film, and the availability of popcorn…

Treasure Island 2

Intriguing news of a sequel to Treasure Island by Andrew Motion, featuring Jim Hawkins Jr and written ‘not quite in the voice of Stevenson, but not far away from it either’.
